Programming Instructions for 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe Remote Fob

1. Vehicles with regular ignition that use remotes featured below:

FOR VEHICLES WITH REGULAR IGNITION:

Do-It-Yourself remote programming procedure is not available for this vehicle. This vehicle requires a diagnostic equipment to be connected to the vehicle to program the remote. You will need to find a local automotive locksmith or a dealer to program this remote.

2. Self DIY Programming Instructions for GM vehicles with push-button ignition that use smart proximity remotes as the featured on the image below:

DIY PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS FOR GM VEHICLES WITH PUSH-BUTTON IGNITION THAT USE SMART KEYS FEATURED BELOW:

Procedure with at least one programmed transmitter available:

  • Please read and understand the programming procedure before you begin. You can also find instructions specific to your vehicle in the vehicle owner’s manual. 
  • Have all remote transmitters with you, both working remotes and new
  • NOTE: Switch ignition OFF
    1. Remove the insert metal key blade from the existing remote and place the remote in the cupholder (pull the metal key blade out of the remote by pressing the release button located in the front of the key)
    2. Insert the metal key blade into the driver’s door lock (use trunk lock for 2-door vehicles)
    3. Turn the key blade in the door lock to the unlock position 5 times within 10 seconds. Driver’s information center DIC will display READY TO LEARN ELECTRONIC KEY #2, 3, 4, ETC.
    4. Place the new remote into the center console transmitter pocket (open the storage area and remove the storage tray to access the transmitter pocket spot)
    5. Press the ignition button. When the new remote is programmed, the DIC will display that it is ready to program the next transmitter.
    6. Remove the new transmitter from the transmitter pocket and press UNLOCK or LOCK button on the remote.
    7. Repeat steps 4, 5, and 6 for each additional remote.
    8. When all additional remotes are programmed, press and hold the ignition button for 5 seconds to exit the programming mode.
    9. Test each of the remotes to make sure they are working.

Procedure when no programmed transmitters available.


Please Note: 
This feature is not available in Canada.
This procedure takes about 30-35 mins to program a key.
Also, the insert key blade needs to be cut prior to performing this programming procedure.

  • Please read and understand the programming procedure before you begin. You can also find instructions specific to your vehicle in the vehicle owner’s manual. 
  • Have all remote transmitters with you
  • Switch ignition OFF
  1. Insert the key blade into the driver’s door lock (use trunk lock for 2-door vehicles) (pull the metal key blade out of the transmitter by pressing the release button located in the front of the key).
  2. Turn the key blade in the door lock to the unlock position 5 times within 10 seconds. Driver’s information center DIC will display REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.
  3. Wait for ten minutes until the DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN and then press the ignition button. The DIC displays will again show REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.
  4. Repeat step 3 two additional times
  5. After the third time, all previously programmed transmitters will no longer work with the vehicle. The remaining transmitters can be relearned during the next steps. The DIC display should now show READY FOR REMOTE # 1.
  6. Place the new transmitter into the center console transmitter pocket (open the storage area and remove the storage tray to access the transmitter pocket spot)
  7. Press the ignition button. When the new transmitter is programmed, the DIC will display that it is ready to program the next transmitter.
  8. Remove the new transmitter from the transmitter pocket, and press UNLOCK or LOCK button on the remote.
  9. Repeat steps 6, 7, and 9 for each additional transmitter.
  10. When all additional transmitters are programmed, press and hold the ignition button for 5 seconds to exit the programming mode.
  11. Test each of the remotes to make sure they are working.
  • NOTE: Remote transmitters can also be programmed using diagnostic equipment by an automotive locksmith or a dealer.


Key Programming Information for 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe

There are 2 types of Remotes Available for this vehicle: (Please Scroll down and match your remote type for more information)

1. Self DIY Programming Instructions for vehicles with regular ignition as the remote image below:

FOR VEHICLES WITH REGULAR IGNITION that use a transponder key:

This procedure requires 2 programmed working keys available for the vehicle. The new key to be programmed needs to be cut before performing this programming procedure. There is a total of eight transponder keys that can be programmed to the vehicle. You can also find instructions specific to your vehicle in the vehicle owner’s manual.

Programming with Two Working Keys:

1. Insert the original, already programmed key in the ignition and turn the key to the ON/RUN position.
2. Turn the key to LOCK/OFF position and remove the key from the ignition.
3. Quickly, within five seconds, insert the second original already programmed key in the ignition and turn the key to the ON/RUN position.
4. Turn the key to LOCK/OFF, and remove the key
5. Insert the new key to be programmed and turn it to the ON/RUN position within five seconds.
The security light will turn off once the key is programmed.
6. Repeat Steps 1–5 if additional keys are to be programmed

Programming without Two Working Keys:

This procedure will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. DIY programming is not available in Canada.

1. Insert the new vehicle key into the ignition.
2. Turn to ON/RUN. The security light will come on.
3. Wait 10 minutes until the security light turns off.
4. Turn the ignition to LOCK/OFF.
5. Repeat Steps 2–4 two more times. After the third time, turn to ON/RUN; the new key is now programmed and all previously programmed keys will no longer work with the vehicle.
6. To program the second key, turn to OFF and insert the second key to be learned and rotate to ON/RUN.

DIY PROGRAMMING INSTRUCTIONS FOR GM VEHICLES WITH PUSH-BUTTON IGNITION THAT USE SMART KEYS FEATURED BELOW:

A. Programming with Two Working Smart Keys

Before you start programming, make sure that the vehicle engine is off and all smart keys, both currently working and new, are with you. Please read and understand the programming procedure before you begin. You can also find instructions specific to your vehicle in the vehicle owner’s manual. Up to 8 smart keys can be programmed to a vehicle.

1. Remove the emergency key blade from one of the working smart keys.
2. Place the two working smart keys in the cupholder.
3. Insert the emergency key blade into the driver door lock cylinder, then turn the key counterclockwise to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds. (on some vehicles, you will need to remove the lock cylinder cap on the driver door handle to access the door lock)
The Driver Information Center (DIC) will display READY FOR REMOTE # 2, 3, 4, etc
4. Place the new smart key into the transmitter pocket (inside the center console storage area between the driver and front passenger seats for Cadillac vehicles OR in the front cupholder for Chevrolet, GMC, and Buick vehicles).
5. Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. When the new smart key is recognized by the vehicle the DIC display will show that it is ready to program the next smart key.
6. Remove the smart key from the transmitter pocket and press the LOCK or UNLOCK button on the remote.
7. To program an additional smart key, repeat Steps 4-6.

When all additional smart keys are programmed, press and hold ENGINE START/STOP for approximately 12 seconds to exit programming mode.

B. Programming without Two Working Smart Keys

If you only have 1 working smart key or none, please follow the steps below. This procedure will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. DIY programming is not available in Canada. Before you start programming, make sure that the vehicle is off and all smart keys, both currently working and new, are with you. Please read and understand the entire procedure before you begin. You can also find instructions specific to your vehicle in the vehicle owner’s manual. Up to 8 smart keys can be programmed to a vehicle.

Please Note:
if currently have no smart keys for your vehicle, you would need to get the emergency key blade in your new smart key cut by a locksmith before you can perform the procedure below.

  1. Remove the key blade from your existing or new smart key.
  2. Insert the emergency key blade into the driver door lock cylinder, then turn the key counterclockwise to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds. (on some vehicles, you will need to remove the lock cylinder cap on the driver door handle to access the door lock). The Driver Information Center (DIC) will display READY FOR REMOTE # 2, 3, 4, etc
  3. Wait for 10 minutes until the DIC displays PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN and then press ENGINE START/STOP. The DIC display will again show REMOTE LEARN PENDING, PLEASE WAIT.
  4. Repeat Step 3 two more times. After the third time, all previously known smart keys will no longer work with the vehicle. The remaining smart keys can be re-programmed during the next steps. The DIC display should now show READY FOR REMOTE # 1.
  5. Place the new smart key into the transmitter pocket (inside the center console storage area between the driver and front passenger seats for Cadillac vehicles OR in the front cupholder for Chevrolet and Buick vehicles).
  6. Press ENGINE START/STOP. When the smart key is recognized by the vehicle, the DIC display will show that it is ready to program the next smart key.
  7. Remove the smart key from the transmitter pocket and press the LOCK or UNLOCK button on the smart key.
  8. To program an additional smart key, repeat Steps 6-8.

    When all additional smart keys are programmed, press and hold ENGINE START/STOP for approximately 12 seconds to exit programming mode.
